The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart.
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.

There have been more than a few people saying lately that the price of my cakes are too high. Rather than trying to argue that customized cakes are indeed expensive not because of the ingredients, but because of the amount of workmanship involved, I thought I'd let pictures do the talking.

That's right. The cakes I used for comparison were found on the website of one of my country's most famous and highly regarded patisseries. KG for KG, each and every one of my cakes is cheaper, yet people tell me I'm expensive...

I realise that I am commenting on a very old post, but I just wanted to add that I made a two tier seaside cake for my daughters preschool graduation. I had a lot of the colours etc already, but still the shopping for ingredients and extras for decorating came to over £40... thats about $80.... add in any time for decorating/baking etc.... Well made, tasty, and good-looking cakes are not cheap to make. Making any type of profit on them is hard- Charge what you think is fair for the time you take (at least minimum wage please!) and the cost of your materials...

Haha, thanks for the comments. I'll be the first to admit that my cakes are definitely not "cheap" lol. I do charge a good amount for them, though when compared to some/most of my competitors in my country, in terms of quality and workmanship I'm definitely considered one of the best, yet my prices are comparable and occasionally lower than the competition. There will always be people who expect diamonds for dimes...

I saw that you said you charge around $500 for one of your cars - thats insane!! Your quality of work is in league with (or above that) of the team at the Charm City bakery (Ace of Cakes) and they charge $1000 MINIMUM! What you do is simply stunning and its very easy to see how much hard work goes into your cakes! <3

I can't believe how people can not see that what your doing is art and takes time - if they want cheap they can have factory produced crap from the local supermarket

As a fellow artisan artist I also have trouble with pricing and I'm guilty of sticking to the lower price ranges just to get some orders in...

I'm just getting into cake decorating and finding it tough as Im going self taught - I'm not too good at it lol but your work is an inspiration and would love to have you on my watch

You are amazing!!! Your cakes are works of art! If people are willing to pay in the 1000's for a mass produced boring looking sculpture, then they should look at the craftmanship and work that went into your cakes and think about how much you're under-charging people! (I say this because I know how much work goes into it!) I'm so impressed!
